    Komal Ka Kamaal!

    Friday, January 11, 2008
''I have the contesting nature to compete''. Do not tag me as a comedy actor. I have been doing experiments for each and every role I get says famous actor Komal Kumar whose presence on screen in public life evokes laughter.

Brother of 100 plus comedy hero of Kannada cinema Jaggesh this dark complexioned humble nature Komal Kumar has in his stock six subjects and many one line stories that fit the film.

On Komal Kumar turning hero he spoke to this correspondent recently.

    Excerpts of an interview:

Why you do not want the comedy tag? You know top actors in this world are called comedians?

I am not against to it. I want myself to be recognized as an actor. I have done very serious role in 'Thavarige Baa Thangi', 'Cheluvina Chittara' and other films still they want to call me as a comedy actor. This is not what I like.

How the fans look at you?

The problem in the public life is also same. Recently I went to a school function in Laggere. Three hundred students wanted me to tell a joke. First I told them the importance of education seriously. The teacher standing next came and told the students go to classes as I have finished the joke.

Where did I tell the joke?

    I was perplexed.

So you have decided not to go to functions?

Exactly right. I do not want to be a repetitive guy. In functions and television programs it has become a routine aspect. I go to the schools of physically or mentally handicap children schools. I know the trauma of such children. I have another brother who suffered such challenges in his life.

You are repeating what Tamil superstar Rajanikanth had done?

That is a small portion in the film 'Thipparahalli Tharlegalu'. Tamil super star Rajanikanth of 'Sivaji' hair style and costume is copied for this film by noted director S.V.Rajendra Singh.

How do you arrive at so and so is good and people laugh at it when you come on screen?

In the last 17 years I have waited for success. In the process I closely observed the need of the audience. First of all the role should inspire me and the extent of laugh should touch me. Then I take the scene papers to the house.

What exactly interest you off late?

The comedy role where a strong dose of trauma is mixed is interesting for me.

You are turning hero once again?

I tried in the beginning from 'Miltry Mava' Kannada film. But it did not click and slowly diverted to comedy roles. Now I feel that it is time to become a hero for a different kind of subject made by another comedy expert Sihikahi Chandru.

What is your score card in 17 years?

I have acted in 76 films and I am 38 years. I have four scripts ready to go on the floor and half a dozen one line stories.
