In an interesting year of sorts, Mollywood has set a new record by becoming the industry which created the maximum number of films this year. The industry has 158 releases in 2013, an average of almost three releases every week, which even surpassed the Hindi industry which created 123 films and Tamil where 149 films found the screens in 2013.The producers have invested almost 450 crores on the films of which they were only able to bring back 300 crores from various kinds of businesses.
The big fall in satellite rights of movies by freshers created such a loss to Mollywood in 2013. The channels were not ready to invest on movies that carried lesser names, which but later failed to bring in little money from theatre counters.Out of the 76 movies that cameout from debutanate directors sixty plus movies even failed to survive more than a couple of days in theatres. Some among them even stopped their screning even on the very second day of their release due to no takers. The biggest hit of the year seems to 'Drishyam, the movie direcetd by Jeethu Joseph featuring Mohanalal which came out during the last season of the year. With a 6.5 crores as satellite rights and much more than from theatres, the movie is expecetd to create a profit of 18 crores in the long run.The other two biggies of the year seems to be Dileep's 'Sringara velan' and 'Sound Thoma' which have made around 8-10 crores as profit.
Three unexpected hits of the year incldues Nivin Pouly-Nasriya starrer 'Neram', Shutter by Joy Mathew and 'Philips and the Monkey Pen' by Rojin Thomas and Shanil Muhammed. With little investment, all the threee movies have managed to make their respective prodcuers merry. All the three movies also ran to fifty days in theatres.
