Finally, it seems to be the coming back of sunny days for Malayalam cinema. The various theaters owners associations like the exhibitors’ federation who were fighting between themselves on the restraints in the number of release centers, has finally given up the dispute.
They have agreed to the state ministers M A Baby and Paloly Mohammed Kutty, that from the next season onwards producers and distributors will be free enough to release their movies in as many centers they like to get them released. This, in fact will come as a big bonus to the industry which is still making a release at a maximum of 48 centers.
In the neighboring states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh producers are free enough to distribute to their films to the maximum centers, with prints sometimes even exceeding 400 to 500.
With the new freedom in number of release stations, Malayalam films will also get released in anywhere up to 100 centers from the next season onwards. This will ensure easy cash returns with in a couple of weeks of release and will help the industry to finalize the box office positions and audience inflow within a week.
More over the producers will be able to market their filmi product via every media, targeting their audience with maximum advertisements and promotions, but for a limited time, as is the case of Bollywood and Tollywood. This will also help every films released to get enough theatres, as a film can attain a super hit status even by a fifty day run. The new move will also help in controlling the piracy.
With the installation of new satellite projection techniques, the new theatres that will soon convert into releasing centers may not find it a big economic difficulty in the conversion into releasing stations and in getting prints.
