Chavittu Natakam, an art form with songs, dialogues and dances, similar to the miracle plays of the West, has long been a folk art which was very less featured in Malayalam movies. The predominant feature of this art is the artistes stamping (Chavittu) the dance floor to the tunes and beats of the songs they sang.

Films like ‘Cheriyachante’, ‘Krurakrithyangal’, ‘Chamayam’, ‘Thommanum Makkalum’ and ‘Kizhakkan Pathrose’ did showed few sequences with this folk art in its backdrop. But now, renowned filmmaker Shaji N Karun’s latest movie 'Kutty Shranku' will feature Mammootty as a Chavittu Natakom artist.

One of the heroines of the movie named Perena (performed by Kamalinee Mukharjee), who falls for the title character, is featured as the daughter of a Chavittu Natakon Aasan (director and teacher).

The movie is being shot at the Alappuzha Thuruthu seashore and Vaikkom Poothotta where a Thattu is constructed for the movie. Thirty artists including Mammootty are being seasoned and trained in the various steps of the art form by Fr. V P Joseph of Aalappuzha Pauranika Ranga Kala Peedom, to support their realistic performances in the movie.
