Malayalam cinema has once again hogged the limelight in the years National Awards winning 13 Awards . But this time much of the awards came in the rarer sections, often made the a monopoly of other languages films .
While Anwar Rasheed's 'Ustad Hotel' was named the best popular movie providing whole some entertainment Lal and Thilakan won special mentions for their performances in films , Ozhimuri and Ustad Hotel, respectively.
While 'Spirit ' from Ranjith was named the best film on social issues, Babu Thiruvalla's 'Thanichalla Njan' was adjudged the best film with a subject on national integration. Siddharth Shiva won the Indira Gandhi award for best debutante director for his '101 Chodyangal'.
'Celluloid' was named the best Malayalam film while Kalpana got the award for best supporting actress for her performance in 'Thanichalla Njan'. Music director Biji pal got his first award for best BG scores for his work in 'Kaliyachan'. Joshy Mathew's 'Black Forest' was named the best film for environment conservation.While Anjali Menon was named the best dialogue writer of the year, Radhakrishnan got the award for best sound recording for his work in Rajeev Ravi's 'Annayum Rasoolum.'
Eleven films from Malayalam were in the race for different awards before the year's national awards selection jury.
