Hollywood has been on my mind for a while: Priyadarshan
Monday, December 05, 2005

Veteran director Priyadarshan is on a high after the huge success of his film "Garam Masala".

The director of several box office hits like "Hera Pheri", Priyadarshan says he is keen on doing a Hollywood film now. He will visit the US this month to discuss a possible Hollywood project.

Excerpts from the interview:

What about your future plans?

I want to cross the seas now.

Do you mean Hollywood?

Yes, it has been on my mind for a long time.

What is the problem then?

Getting studio support is the biggest stumbling block there. Later this month I am leaving for the US to have talks with Ashok Amritraj about a Hollywood project.

What are your plans in the US?

We are meeting some people at the Disney studios. A few people in Canada are also interested. Wait and watch.

Can you elaborate?

I have never planned anything in life because planning too much makes me insecure and affects my work.

With your success in Bollywood, do you think you have been accepted by the industry now?

Certainly, because in the last four years, four of my films have been hits.

Tell us something about your complete projects.

I have just finished my 14th Hindi film "Malamaal Weekly". I would rate it as an experimental film. I recreated a Madhya Pradesh village in Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu. It is a comedy starring Paresh Rawal, Om Puri and Ritesh Deshmukh.

Your upcoming film?

This is an unnamed Bollywood film and would be shot in London from Jan 20. It stars Akshaya Kumar, Ayesha Takia, Suneil Shetty, Govinda and Paresh Rawal.

What is it about?

It is 100 percent entertainment because the Hindi audience only likes fun-filled movies. For Hindi films to be successful, they have to be fast paced. That is one reason why "Kyon Ki" did not do as well as it was expected to.

Who are the people behind this project?

Ashta Vinayak has produced the film and the story is by Niraj Vora.

Despite your success in Bollywood, what happened to your last couple of (Malayalam) films here?

Yes, true. I have become a spoilt director because of the huge infrastructure available in Bollywood. So I started making compromises here, which becomes evident in the final output and the film suffers.

When are you making your next Malayalam film?

Not before three years.
