Uthara Swayamvaram - Nothing special in ‘Uthara Swayamvaram’
IndiaGlitz  [Friday, November 13, 2009]

Very few in the Mollywood industry seems to try to deliver films that may be called 'special'. All others, including Ramakanth Sarju in his debut movie ‘Uthara Swayamavaram’ is going after the tried and tested path, based on outdated stories that try more to tickle our funny bone than to narrate the events with quality.

Moving on with that old stale ''poor boy meets rich girl'' story with some twists that may give a feel of serious blunders Sarju finds its hard to keep the proceedings in control. And on an average script that opt for illogical ways to complete the act, ‘Uthara Swayamvaram’ ends up as another movie, that is made for a typical audience who don't demand much improvisations in regular stuffs.

The movie has Jayasuriya as Prakashan, a lazy guy always dreaming about Uthara (Roma) called as Ponnu, whom he had saved from an abandoned well in his childhood. His father Sreedharakurup, who runs a grocery shop is much worried about his son's attitude. Uthara, the daughter of rich businessman Ponnuveettil Mahdevan (Lalu Alex) has forgotten the ''whole incident long back and is not aware of Prakashan and his dreams. But after some twists, Prakashan finds his dreams getting realised as Uthara decides to marry Prakashan. But the panic alarm rings high for the viewers as their marriage doesn't last even for a day and movie follows to get to the reasons and their future, hazardously.

J Pallassery has filled the movie with all kinds of dramatic situations that bring out family tensions, sentiments and every associated formula stuff. But with a running time of 148 minutes, that too in a regular plot, the movie ends up as a predictable stuff. Of course, ‘Uthara Swayamvaram’ has its share of good sequences, funny moments and laughter, but not the kind that you expect from a hilarious stuff. And after the first hour when the smattering of laughs disappear, the film slowly turns uncomfortable.

Jayasurya continues with his dumb act, that he practiced in movies like 'Currency' and ‘Lolipop’. Roma is good as usual, in her kind of regular role. Sarju shows promises in the handling of his supporting cast like Balachandra Menon, Lalu Alex, Sai Kumar, Janardhanan, Shobha Mohan and Varada who have done their parts well. And as witnessed in every movies of recent times, plenty of doubleenterades and buffoonery spoil the grace of many sequences.

Salon George is appreciably good with his visuals while M Jayachandran's songs also worked good times for the movie.

Altogether ‘Uthara Swayamvaram’ is left for those who had made a habit to be with all those slap sticks and buffoonery. But had the makers taken a little more care to deliver some quality wits instead, the rest of the movie could have been a decent family entertainer.
