Bhoopadathil Illatha Oridam Movie Review - A brainless 'Bhoopadam'

IndiaGlitz  [Tuesday, September 18, 2012]

Many of the satirical 'feel good'ers has escaped the wrath of viewers as they have succeeded in the juggling act between humour and reality. But no such luck here in debutante director Joe Chalissery's movie Bhoopadathil Illatha Oridam(BIO). The movie which fails to engage the viewers through the rustic tracks of its village maps, ends up as a lackadaisical affair, all through.

A filmy  adaptation of Sethu's 'Deshathinte Vijayam', the movie's proverbial village is titled ' Vattanaathra' , which is ruled by feudalistic panchayath president Ezhuthachan(Nedumudi venu) with the help of the local moronic S I Idikkula(Innocent) . A big theft happens in the local jewellery shop which becomes the burning issue in the village. The police who is little interested in finding clues or to arrest someone is after creating a credible witness. And they zeroes in on an idealistic schoolteacher named Madhavankutty (Sreenivasan). The man who stays in a meek room in the heart of the village is followed by the police and the  local president to testify in a court as having seen a crime that he had not witnessed . Fearing of its consequences, Madhavankutty flees back to his home where his wife Vimala (Rajasri) and the couple's two kids are waiting for him. But with another rape happening to Bhaama(Iniya), the local maid of Madhavankutty, he is forced to comeback and give a valued testimony.

The one-line of the movie is fine and but the screenwriter's attempt to fill in the spaces leaves much to be desired. With no real engaging happenings and fine dialogues, the stereotyped characters ranging from Murali(Nivin Poly), the educated but unemployed youth, the  opposition leader Sugunan (Suraj Venjarammoodu) and the regular's in the characteristic teashop all appear disastrously clichéd. The debutante director needs to work a lot on his craft of making thing engaging enough. The multitudes of attempt in evoking humour fail disastrously for the sequences and the movie itself. The makers were not able to give any demanding roles to Sreenivasan and Nivin poly. Rajashre and Iniya appear good but in undemanding roles.   Two good songs by Mohan Sithara and average technical supports are the only saving grace in the movie. This 'Bhoopadithil illatha Oridam' could have worked if it has arrived at least twenty years ago. But as of now, the movie is sure to sink without a trace in the in the maps of commercial Mollywood.
