The recent incident of building collapse in the outskirts of Chennai which took away the life of more than 20 people has shattered the Metro city. The incident had happened three days back but still many are feared to be trapped in the debris and the death toll is expected to increase.
At the wake of this incident director A.R.Murugadoss has spoken about the need for improving the safety of migrant construction workers in Chennai. It is to be remembered that the director’s second film ‘Ramana’ which was a critically and commercially successful film had a building collapse scene as an important incident leading to the formation of a massive Anti corruption force.
Murugadoss noted that most of the construction workers are migrants from other states. They come to another state to make a living. The wages paid to them are very low. No one cares about safe working conditions and there is hardly any mechanism to safeguard their lives from risks associated with construction mishaps. There are various fatal construction mishaps happening in many states in the country.
Speaking about the solution part, the highly acclaimed director said, “We should ensure foolproof safety measures for construction workers in work place. We should also promote awareness about work safety measures. Only then we can reduce the impact of such mishaps”.
