High Court dismisses petition on Minor Heroines

When the trailer of director  Mani Ratnam’s ‘Kadal’ released there was uproar within a section of intellectuals and child rights activists for featuring Thulasi, a hardly 16 year old school going child at that time in a lip-kiss scene. The shot was eventually removed from the film

However ‘Kadal’ was not the first or the last film to have a teenager as its heroine. Many heroines who have ruled the cine industry have entered the film industry during their early teens playing heroines to elderly heroes in the film industry. In order to stop this, a school teacher from T.Nagar, Chennai named Muthulakshmi had filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking to prohibit casting minor girls as heroines in films.

Muthuselvi who is also the secretary of Tamilnadu Makkal Katchi in her petition had argued that a person will be mature enough to judge between good and bad only after attaining the majority age. Minors will not know the adversities that are prevalent in the film industry and they are often forced by their parents and relatives to act in films.  Hence Muthulakshmi had sought a ban from casting minors as heroines in films.

The petition came for the hearing on August 22. The honorable Judges Justice M.Sathyanarayanan and Justice S.K.Kaul the Chief Justice of the Madras HC dismissed the petition since the petitioner counsel sought to withdraw the petition.
