Writer Jayakanthan was honored jointly on receiving the Padma Bhushan as well as completing his 76th birthday. The guests of honour for the event, held on Friday evening, included Kamal Haasan and Kavipperarasu Vairamuthu.

One of the language's most prolific writers, his works has received many a national honour. In fact, a few of his stories have later been made as films, including the popular 'Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal', which won its protagonist Lakshmi a National Award for Best Actress.

Speaking at the function, Kamal Haasan openly stated his admiration for the writer. He, in fact, took his admiration one step ahead, and said his style of writing was greatly influenced by Jayakanthan's. "I had not studied in Tamil, and my Tamil was not too good. In those times, it was always Jayakanthan's writings that helped me shape my writing. Even today, I think my way of writing is similar to his," said the actor.
