Synonymous with International Workers' Day, or Labour Day, May Day aims to acknowledge the social and economic achievements of the labour movement. Though celebration customs vary according to countries, in India processions are carried out by various labour organizations. May Day was first observed on May 1, 1927 in the country. In the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, Labour Day is observed as 'Maharashtra divas' and 'Gujarat Diwas'.
The day is a reminder that a conscious effort has to be made reaffirm solidarity among all the working classes irrespective of social standing. This is one of the main reasons that the Cinema Industry should also observe May Day. Each and every person connected to the industry from the food service and cleaning staff to the camera and unit members should be remembered for their efforts. Though cinema is a lucrative industry, most of its working members suffer at the lower strata.
May Day is a reminder that the welfare of these people should also be taken care of. This May Day, let's stand up and take a moment to applaud the efforts of an industry that often works overtime to make life more entertaining.
