A Chennai court has stayed the release of 'Vana Yudhdham', a feature film on slain forest brigand Veerappan, till April 17. The XVII assistant city civil court judge Ganesa Moorthy passed the order on a petition filed by RR Gopal, editor of biweekly Nakkheeran.

In his petition, Gopal contended that on July 30, 2000, Veerappan had abducted Kannada actor Rajkumar and three of his relatives from a farmhouse in Erode.

On the request of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments, he agreed to play the role of government emissary to rescue the hostages from Veerappan.

"I had seen newspaper reports that A M R Ramesh and V Srinivas and K Jagadeesh have made a full fledged film on the life of Veerappan. The film was to be released in the first week of May," Gopal said.

The petitioner said that he had published a book on Veerappan's life and this was registered under the Copyrights Act. Gopal said he did not want to claim copyright for the film, but apprehended that his character should not be spoilt by the film.

Hearing the plea, the Judge directed the filmmakers to show Gopal the movie and get his consent about his character in the film before its release.
