Director, producer and entrepreneur Navodaya Appachan, who gave India its first 3D film 'My Dear Kuttichathan', died at a private hospital in Kochi on Monday night after battling cancer for a long time.
He was 81 and is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. Appachan developed some uneasiness early Monday and was moved to the intensive care unit and died in the evening, sources say. He was under treatment for cancer for the past 10 years.
Appachan was born in 1924, in Pulincunoo, a village in Alappuzha, Kerala. His 'My Dear Kuttichathan' was dubbed in several languages and created sensation all over India. He was also the founder of Navodaya Studio and Kishkinta, the amusement park near Tambaram on the outskirts of Chennai.
Appachan always stood first in adapting to latest technology. His Navodaya introduced digital film editing in 1989. It also made the first television serial of the south, 'Bible Ki Kahaniyan', a Hindi serial on Dooradarshan during 1990-91.
