Ilayaraja gets Akademi award

Ilayaraja and eight other eminent artistes from the field of music have been selected for the coveted Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2012.

The 'Isaignani' has been awarded for creative and experimental music. Meanwhile, Grammy Award-winning percussionist T H Vinayakram is among four personalities chosen for the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi fellowship.

The honour of Akademi Fellow, conferred since 1954 and Akademi awards since 1952 not only symbolises the highest standard of excellence and achievements on a national basis but also recognises the sustained individual work and contribution to the practice and appreciation of arts through performance, teaching and scholarship. 

The honour of Akademi Fellow and award carries a purse money of Rs 3 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively. Fans of Ilayaraja have been celebrating his winning the prestigious award, on social networking and other platforms.
