Comedy in Tamil Cinema has evolved a lot over the years, and we are indebted to the comedians. One such Legendary Comedian is our Goundamani. His real name was Mani and after the superhit stage show "Oor Gounder", he was christened as Goundamani. Till his entry, comedy always used to be either the sidekick to the hero or forming a separate track. No other comedian had the guts to mimic and ridicule Politics in such a manner as Goundamani did and his ironic remarks on blindfolded superstition paved way for Comedy with a message.

He innovated Tamil cinema comedy along with his co-actor Senthil and together they performed slapstick humour in almost 450 films. They ruled the comedy sector for some decades, and every time they are onscreen, it's nothing short of an entertainment. A lot of comedians till date are inspired by his genre of humour making, and have tailored it to their own style. Even now the star comedian Santhanam is considered as "Chinna Goundamani" as his comedy tracks are largely inspired by Goundamani.

He is the synonym of "Sarcasm" and he revolutionized hero worship by mocking them in his usual sarcastic manner. He adapted himself to the story and carved a niche in the comedy segment of the movie. His blends well with the heroes and there was a period when people started looking for him in almost every movie. His dialogue delivery has always been the highlight and some of his dialogues are still famous. A. Veerapan used to help him with comedy track writing for his movies. One of the best jokes of Tamil cinema is the "Vazhai pazham" comedy and to date it brings the house down with laughter.

Goundamani's earlier movies used to figure him in a separate track and later on he started to act along with the hero as a close friend or a relative. He has featured in a lot of notable movies and some of the hit combinations are:

Goundamani & Sathyaraj:

These two thrive by making scornful remarks at each other and the public. Goundamani's humour is at its peak, whenever he is onscreen with Sathyaraj, and together they have acted in hit movies like Nadigan, Rikshamama, Maaman Magal, Thai Maaman, Vallal etc. Their distinctive comedy is because of the exquisite timing and the audience could never get enough of them. In Rikshamama, Goundamani plays Sathyaraj's friend and he dresses up as a Muslim lady to rent a house. The gimmick floors the audience and is still being played in tamil channels as top notch comedy. Remember the line "Adangapa ithu Ulaga nadipu da sami"

Goundamani & Karthik:

Instantly the movie "Ullathai Allitha" comes to our mind. The movie has Goundamani playing the role of Karthik's friend and he acts as the "Son-in-law" to Manikandan. This movie is still considered to be one of the best Comedies in Tamil Cinema with Goundamani taking a large portion of credit. These two rocked the screen with other movies like Unakkaga elam unakaga, Mettukudi and he also enacted the role of "Yemadharma rajan" in the movie Luckyman. The role fetched him many accolades and his role was equivalent to the hero with a funny twist.

Goundamani & Rajini:

Its not Rocket science to know the fact that Superstar himself is good at comedy. And when he appears along with this comedy king, its fun all the way. Goundamani's debut movie itself is with Rajini in "16 Vayathinile", and no one can forget his line "Pathhavechitiye Paratai". Another fun n frolic blockbuster "Mannan" released in 1992, and the duo's comedy stands apart. The famous scene of them trying to bunk their work for a movie and get caught is the highlight. At a time when people wrote off Goundamani's knack of humour, Superstar revived him with "BABA".

Goundamani & Arjun:

Action King Arjun is always known for his serious and patriotic movies, and he infuses comedy neatly in the script. In the movie Jai Hind, he appears as "Kottasamy" the constable and appears through the action packed second half and creates some relief with light hearted comedy. Another blockbuster comedy is Shankar's "Gentleman". The movie was one of a kind and this comedy king appears in almost the entire movie alongside Arjun.

Goundamani & Senthil:

The Laurel & Hardy of Tamil cinema, the comedy sensation and titles which are never enough for these two. Hardly is there any comedy scenes played in channels without their comedy. Right from the famed "Banana" comedy, their fun is unlimited. Some prominent movies are Karagatakaran, Nattamai, Ejaman, Chinna gounder etc the list could go on. There was a time when the directors and producers used to get their callsheet before even obtaining the lead starcast. Most of their movies also had a message to the society in a sarcastic way, after all comedy is the best platform to reach the public.

Apart from these hit combinations, Goundamani has performed alongside the hero in so many movies like Janaki Raman, Murai Maman, Tata Birla, Chinna Thambi and many more. He also has been enacted as the hero in some of the movies.

His comic phrases are so popular that there is an android application with his one liners and its downloaded widely by smart phone users. The dialogues such as "Arasiyale ithelam satharnampa"," Narayana intha kosu thangamudiyala" are so in style that they are used in normal speech as well.

To Conclude, Goundamani and his gimmicks will be missed though comedy has evolved over the years.
