The oscar nominations are in and all eyes have turned to India with the film Life of Pi getting nominated in 11 different categories. The movie, directed by Academy Award Winning Director Ang Lee had an Indian cast including Suraj Sharma as Pi, Irrfan Khan, Tabu and Abil Hussain. playing important roles. Life of Pi will compete against other major guns from Hollywood at the Oscars.
Based on Yann Martel's novel, Life of Pi was based in Pondycherry for a large part and tells the story about a boy who gets stranded on a life-boat with a Bengal Tiger after a shipwreck. Ang Lee directed the film in 3D giving viewers a never-before seen experience of India and the ocean. Along with the Director getting nominated for all the major awards, Bombay Jeyashree's song 'Pi's Lullaby' has also been shortlisted for an Academy Award. The singer's origin from Tamil Nadu will also be noted by the industry and she will be carrying the hopes of many back from India.
"I am overwhelmed and feel privileged to be a part of this great movie as an Indian actor, being a stage actor primarily. I was expecting the film and Lee to be nominated in major categories but 11 nods is really great" said Abil Hussain when asked about the news.
Life of Pi has also been nominated for 3 Golden Globes and 10 BAFTA awards and has pushed forward India's culture and heritage throughout the Globe. Interestingly, it's biggest contender 'Lincoln' directed by Steven Spielberg also has an Indian connection, thanks to Reliance-Dreamworks who are producing the film. This is indeed a great moment for India once again to be represented so much at the Oscars. After the success of Slumdog Milionaire, we can once again expect a coup for the makers of the film.
With the final event set to take place on the 24th of February, we can hope that this will be a big year for India at the Oscars.
