Since the release of the film's poster, there have been many discussions among the audience if the film is all about politics. Also there have been talks which said that Vijay would be doing a role of a politician. A reason for this could likely be Vijay's desire in political life. He has once said his fans that he would enter the field at the right time. And so, when there is a news relating Vijay to politics, it spreads wide.

When asked Vijay regarding the rumors, he replied, "No, the movie has nothing to do with politics. We zeroed in on 'Thalaiva' because it suits Vijay's image and the film's story. Even the poster is designed keeping it in mind. The film has nothing to do with politics."
