Madhuvanti Arun presents 'Shakthi', a revolutionary Tamil play

IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, March 06, 2013]

Shakthi, the Tamil adaptation of the iconic 50s film "Wait until Dark" starring Audrey Hepburn, marks the directorial debut by Madhuvanthi Arun.

This play by Madhuvanthi is about a blind woman who surpasses her own limits to avert a major disaster caused due to circumstances around her.  The play will be staged on a scintillating 'revolving stage' the first of its kind ever used in Tamil theatre designed by the National award winning Art Director, Padmashri Dr. Thota Tharrani, a concept that was used twenty years ago when the play was initially directed by noted actor and theatre person, Mr. Y Gee Mahendra. Music director, Anirudh Ravichander would be composing the background score. This play is being performed by the third generation of artistes trained by Mr Y Gee Mahendra, who has served the field and continues to serve the field of Tamil theatre for over forty years now.

Speaking on Shakthi, Madhuvanthi Arun states "Shakthi is a tribute to my father Mr. Y.Gee. Mahendra and grandfather, Mr. Y G Parthasarathy who started UAA troupe way back in 1952, almost 60 years ago to bring in social themes into the field of drama at a time where mythological plays were more popular. We are probably the longest running troupe in the history of Tamil theatre with my father, Mr. Y Gee Mahendra running it for almost 37 years now. This play will reinforce the fact that the torch of Tamil theatre will be passed on to the next generation, who in turn will continue to spread the rich heritage of the Indian art across the world".

"Also the use of technology will not only go a long way in attracting the younger generation to watching more Tamil plays but will also add to the experience of the theatre goers. That's exactly what we will bring through Shakthi, where we will be using the virtual sets through projection of images to present some of the scenes apart from the revolutionary revolving stage, a first of its kind in Tamil Theatre" she added.

Shakthi, a play by Madhuvanthi Arun and United Amateur Artistes (UAA) will be performed on March 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th, 2013 at Narada Gana Sabha , Chennai . The show timing is 6.45pm.
