An exclusive interview with playback singer Grace

    Thursday, September 02, 2004
No mistaking her grace Before Cheena Thaana... happened she was better known as the better half of Karunas. Post success, it is the other way around. This is an interesting joke doing the rounds in Kollywood. But Karunas is hardly to complain as he was the one who got the break for Grace.
'Music director Bharadwaj and director Charan were on the lookout for a husky voice to do that number. When the tune was played, Karunas suggested my name.I went with the mind set of doing the whole song and not just the track. Heeding Charan's advice, I made no effort to bring in the rich effect to my voice.'
Did she strain that extra sinew or bargained for the uproar response?
'I wanted to give it a best shot and let things happen. But the whole unit had evidently pinned great hopes. Had to swallow the huge disappointment when pallavi and a portion of saranam had to be knocked off for some pressing reasons.' In Grace's opinion, the song would have been rated on a par with Manmadha Rasa if only the whole portion had been retained. 'The picturisation and the special effects gave the extra impetus. Tough luck for me and the dancer Raaki, who was all fire.'
Grace's first committed film was Devadayayi Kanden,a duet with Yugendran. Before that, her solo number in the Telugu flick Vikram won her a collection of admirers. For variety, she has rendered a soft number in the forthcoming Mahanadigan. Grace and Karunas have joined together to do the Kootthadi Guys giving the Westernized color to Tamil folk songs. No doubt inspired by their earlier venture 'Millennium 2000,' a delightful package remixing the Chandrababu hits.
Grace is doing the balancing act to perfection - she has a 22-member orchestra troupe, churning out Tamil, Hindi and Pop songs. She has no complaints of the busy schedule 'for it helps to get to perform at various places and understand the meaning of life better.'
She has indeed come a long way since the time she met and married Karunas. 'He had come as a judge for an inter-collegiate programme. The request to assist him in video albums brought us together."Dreams are not complete in one album or one popular number. Early success only ensures that the adrenaline flows in the right direction. Success indeed comes with a price-tag.
To gain something, you have to give something, she philosophizes, in her not being able to spend quality time with family.
