Turning a hero - No laughing matter for Vivek

    Monday, September 27, 2004
You cannot afford to make a comedy of errors in a serious film seriously. That makes life no easier for comedians is
entirely a different aspect. Tamil filmdom has a rich legacy of comedians - right from the days of Kalaivanar N S Krishnan to the present happening sensation Chinna Kalaivanar Vivekh - note the added h to his name. The additional word got stuck like the Adappavi - his way of saying good morning to all his fans.
Was it the itch to turn into a hero in Solli Adipen.
‘I should attribute that to my confidence. When you are in the field for 16 years, you should be carrying loads of those in your piggyback. In a humorous film, you will see a different facet of me. A light film with a heavy dosage of message.’ It is no introspection time, Vivekh paused to add. ‘I see it as a separate track and a diversion. Should the new venture turn out to be a smooth take-off, it could have an extension. No way, it will come in the way of the main track.’
If Vivekh is ruling the roost in Kollywood, it is mainly due to his hard work and perseverance. Not forgetting the KB (K Balachander) factor which brought him to the fore. In fact it was KB, who introduced him in Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal. Vivek said his accomplishments was his way of repaying the gratitude to ‘KB Sir.’
In Vivekh’s opinion, comedians have a strong role to play in sending across messages. ‘Slapstick comedy is a thing of the past. Day-to-day happenings and problems pertaining to that evince interest in the common man. His day is made seeing the visuals on the big screen.’
Is he affected by the pressure factor with the expectations increasing every time?
‘Pressure is there in retaining the quality. Taking on issues and finding solutions is the idea. Creating issues is the least of my intention.’ Of the M R Radha influence - the unmistakable punch in that distinct style - Vivekh said, the actor had an extraordinary influence on the masses. The messages stay in the mind if it be identified with a popular figure.
Vivekh felt there is so much to be redeemed in the education pattern of the State. He has shred the system to pieces in one of his forthcoming films. Only he hoped that the viewers do not read too much into the sentiment factor.
Good clean comedy without hurting the sentiments of anyone is fine for all genres, said Vivekh. But then, dwelling on subjects with political connotations means bordering beyond the accepted parameters.

Admitting the obligatory factor of his presence in some of the films, Vivekh said he was still game to do those. ‘It then becomes the need to go through the whole happening and fit in the comedy track. It’s always a race against time. Sometimes the pressure brings the best out of me. As a human being, I am entitled to my off days. Have not spared my good friends in the industry. Luckily, they have taken it in the same spirit with which they were said.’
Much of the footage in the happening satellite channels is reserved for comedy time. With the spotlight on Vivekh, one is assured to have his cupful moments of fun before retiring to bed - the best ways to wind the day.
