My next movie is with Ajith: Bala

    Monday, October 18, 2004
It is very difficult to understand the mind and mood of director Bala. He is not a maverick; yet, he always springs a surprise on you. Just when people were expecting a new film after the hit of Pithamagan, he has unexpectedly taken to production. He is all set to produce a movie titled Mayavi with Surya and Jothika in the lead roles. Singapuli, an associate of Bala himself, would direct Mayavi.

    Why production now?

Why not? It has been always my dream to produce movies and I am happy that it has become a reality with Mayavi. I guess the pressures of a producer are different from that of a director. But in a sense, both are the parents of a film.

Do you have any goals as a producer?

I want to provide opportunities for dedicated creators, who can give quality movies. It is my intense desire to do something for thousands of families whose livelihood is dependent on cinema. My home production would introduce newcomers with great talents.

Your take on your assistant Singapuli

Singapuli was the associate director in Pithamagan. He has a great passion for comedy. He is a jovial man on the sets and I always admired his spontaneous humor. When he narrated this humorous story to me, I immediately decided to produce it myself.

    Tell us about Mayavi

As I told you it is a funny movie. It is not about comedy alone. It goes one step higher "it is about evolved humor. It is about a magician. It is replete with rib-tickling comedy and mirth.

    But why Surya again?

A talented actor like Surya was waiting for a good role after Peralagan. I felt Surya would be the right choice to play the lead in Mayavi. The film has a lot of scope for him to prove his acting credentials. He has all the nuances to shine in this unique role.

Would you like to compare Vikram and Surya?

I admire both the actors. Vikram is a patient man who does a lot of homework to give his best on screen. He constantly improvises on his role and no doubt is a dedicated actor. Surya is a bubbly and charming hero. He gives right expressions as demanded by a director. He is a shocking performer.

Were you disappointed on missing out the best director award in the recently announced National awards?

I have no worries on not being chosen for the award. Honestly I never expected an award for my film. I alone know where and all I had committed blunders in all my three movies so far.

    On your forthcoming directorial venture.....

After Pithamagan, I decided to a movie starring Dhanush. It was a story that revolves around a 20-year-old youth. However he had some problems in between, hence I decided to do the movie later. Certainly in future I would doing the same story with Dhanush, whom I consider one of the better performers. Meanwhile, my next would be a movie with Ajith in the lead role. A M Rathnam would be producing the venture. We hope to begin the venture soon.
