I want to play a villain in a movie: Vikram

    Saturday, February 05, 2005
After 12 years of struggle, Vikram seems to have risen to the pinnacle.

His long wait and patience has culminated in the highest award for acting in the country - National Award for Best Actor.

Having realized his ambition, Vikram is now ready for his next --- trying his hand at innovative roles, perhaps to gain
    self-satisfaction.

Expressing his desire to play a notorious villain in a movie throughout, Vikram says, "after gaining name and fame comes
pursuit to attain personal satisfaction in what one ventures into".

Here''s a quick chat with Vikram who has returned triumphant from New Delhi with the coveted national award.

Describe your feeling on receiving the national award?

It was simply amazing. Out of the world. To be on the stage with veteran directors like Mrinal Sen and renowned actress like Sharmila Tagore is a great experience. I am thrilled. Mrinal Sen appreciated me and even had some suggestions to me. It was my dream since my college days to act in films, excel in the profession and win laurels, which I have achieved today. My struggle to establish me in this competitive industryhas culminated with the award. But a fresh desire has come up in my mind -To repeat the good show. I want to do good andmeaningful films.

    What's next after Anniyan?

I haven't decided yet. Couple of producers and directors have approached me. Anyway, I want to make it clear that I will do both commercial and experimental movies.

Can you throw more light on Anniyan?

It's too early to discuss about Anniyan. It's a movie that truly belongs to Shankar. It has a strong message typical to Shankar's earlier films. A mix of entertainment and social message is Anniyan. The movie would make us think as to why India is still under development when smaller nations have grown manifold in economy and self sufficiency.

Are you choosy about your roles?

Of course. I still love doing mass films. Thanks to director Bala, an actor inside me was discovered in Sethu who now and then ventures to do movies like Kasi, Pithamagan and Anniyan.

Any plans to act in other languages?

Certainly. My recent films have done well in Andhra Pradesh. Hence I am planning to do a straight film in Telugu by next year. I aspire to act at least in a Hindi and a Malayalam movie.
