‘Jayam’ introduced you to Tamil cinema. You showed lot of promise in you performance and received critical acclaim. Yet your subsequent films ‘Varnajalam’ and ‘Ethiri’ though having good star cast did not fare well. What is the reason?
Though both the films did not fare well commercially, it gave me lot of satisfaction. I sign films expecting it to do good business, but unfortunately all films will not fetch the same kind of response. In ‘Varnajalam’ my character had lot of scope to act and I did remarkably well yet the film was not successful. ‘Ethiri’ was a comedy film directed by the successful filmmaker K.S.Ravikumar. My character also was sketched on a lighter vein. I enjoyed doing that role.
How has ‘Anniyan’ progressed? What were your expectations while accepting the offer?
It has come really well. Shankar’s films have a different treatment to the storyline and people have lot of expectation. I too had that kind of expectation. It has developed more that what I expected and will be a successful blockbuster. And I am sure my name in the industry will not be the same, as this one film is going to fetch me fame of three successful films.
What is the kind of role you are portraying?
I am acting as an Iyengar girl that has lot of scope acting wise. It has come out really well and Iam very happy about my performance. It is amazing to what extent Shankar has conceived the character and shaped me according to the character’s requirements. I don’t have to tell about Shankar’s caliber, everyone knows.
How was it working with Shankar?
He is a very efficient director. I have not seen him getting tensed or irritated and he has never lost his temper. He is calm and soft spoken, yet very competently gets work done. He never compromises on his expectations, but persistently gets the result he wants. When I have lengthy dialogues and whenever I make mistakes he is not perturbed; for any number of retakes he very patiently gets the shot done according to the expressions required. In songs generally the choreographer directs while the director just monitors, but in Shankar’s films he only handles the entire dance sequences. Such is his involvement. It was a great experience working with Shankar.
You act in Telugu films. It is said that heroines there have to be glamorous in order to survive there. Do you act glamorously there?
No I will not agree. It is false to think that with glamour one can be successful. Just because few heroines have been glamorous it does not mean everyone is expected to be like that. The subject is the strong point for a movie’s success. Several films of Chiranjeevi and Nagarjuna that are character based have been super hits. As for me, if the character requires I do not mind doing glamorous roles. But unnecessarily just for the sake of glamour I will not act. Only if it requires I will be glamorous.
What about your future films?
As for Tamil, only after the release of ‘Anniyan’ I am planning to accept new films, but in Telugu I am doing a film for Teja along with Uday Kiran.
Do you have any role model?
I am greatly impressed about Meena Kumari and Madhuri Dixit. Though I will not imitate them as each of us has our own distinct style, I would like to be remembered evergreen like them.
What about your marriage plans? Will it be a love or arranged marriage?
Right now my career is important and so marriage is currently not in my plans. But when it happens it definitely will be an arranged one. I do not believe in love marriages. There are some few successful ones, but on the large scale it has always ended in a disaster. I have seen many. Our culture and heritage has lot of disciplined principles that will do us good in the long run. Just for the sake of love one should not desert one’s parents and end up living in misery without their blessings and support. I feel it is foolhardy to rely on some unknown stranger and give up one’s entire life in his hands. It is dangerous also. Our parents will always mean the best for us and will do the right thing for us.
