    Interview with Silambarasan

    Wednesday, February 23, 2005
Tamil cinema has seen the influx of young heroes and one amazes at their empowerment in the industry. And one among the current crop of youngsters ruling the roost is the “Little Super Star.” A tête-à-tête with the star.

The recently successful venture of yours that you acted as well as scripted the story and screenplay ‘Manmadhan’ has shades of ‘Sigappu Rojakkal.’ Was it an inspiration?

There are a lot of differences between the two though few scenes may remind of ‘Sigappu Rojakkal.’ Basically it is two different subjects. Actually in those days when ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’ was released many criticized that it is a remake of a Hollywood production. These kinds of comparisons are bound to be said.

You have received lot of critical acclaim for the first time in this film only. All types of audiences have appreciated your performance. What do you think about this?

All the films that I have acted so far, I have performed very well. True in this film there are lot of appealing situations for the audience. But nevertheless my other films also have brought me lot of accolades.

What was the reason to include the song sequence for Mandira Bedi and Yana Gupta. Was it purely because of glamour?

Mandira Bedi is a very sensational model who created a big stir in the entire country. I wanted her to do the role so that there will be more credence. That is why I went all the way to Mumbai and convinced her to do the part. She was not interested in films from the south, but when I narrated the story she was very impressed and accepted to do the role. And Yana Gupta is a very good dancer that is why I cast her also. It is not only for glamour that they were roped in, as there are several glamour stars here itself. But I felt them necessary and that’s why got them.

Goundamani is a very senior artiste. Do you feel this confrontation with him is necessary?

I am basically a very soft person. I did not purposely confront him. I respect elders and seniors in the industry. Hence I will never on my own quarrel with anybody, but if someone on their own bothers me I will not keep quiet.

It is said that the entire film was directed by you. Yet the titles say Murugan as the director. What do you say for this?
It is also criticized that you generally interfere in the story, heroine casting and direction.

I did not entirely direct the film though I have done the supervision. I was already loaded with the scripting of the story, screenplay and also playing dual roles. So I did not want to take up too many responsibilities, hence I had asked Murugan to take care of direction. As for interfering I never contradict the director, but as a hero I have to be thorough with story and know the co artistes. This will benefit the outcome of the film that will eventually help the director and the producer. This is what I do, but have been misquoted on that

    How is ‘Thotti Jaya?’

It is coming out very well. I have only one responsibility of acting while Durai is handling the direction and Kalaipuli S. Thanu is producing.
