Saran’s hour of happiness
Monday, November 07, 2005

Braving heavy down pour, director Saran was busy canning a song sequence for his Idhaya Thirudan at the Guindy Race Course, recently.

With the film nearing completion, at his relaxed self Saran opened out. He had a special reason to be happy, getting to direct a film for Kavithalaya banner, where he had his apprenticeship.

Besides Jayam Ravi and Mumbai girl Kamna Jethmalani, Idhaya Thirudan has Vani Viswanath, Nasser, Prakash Raj, Kalpana, Kaka Radhakrishnan, Madan Bob, ''''Crazy'''' Mohan and M S Baskar in the supporting cast.

A quick chat with the director

Tell us about this film

Like my earlier films romance is the base with the lover couple not facing any external problems but mostly self-created. Commercial ingredients are well laced with the right mix to attract audience. Dialogues by ‘Crazy' Mohan, songs and stunts will have a major say in the package, which also has an item number from the Keralite Jyothirmayi.

How is it working for Kavithalaya?

The film is a happy one ---- a romantic entertainer with all commercial ingredients at right mix. Doing a movie for Kavithalaya, where I learnt the nuances of filmmaking is a great joy. It was nice to work with youngsters like Ravi and Kamna. The movie has shaped up well.

On venturing to production

A director can have a good run only for a short span as the tastes and preferences of the audiences change.Whereas a producer has more longevity. More over, I want to encourage more talent and hence started my production house. My debut venture Aaru features Suriya and Trisha and is directed by Hari.

What are your views on the Tamil film industry today?

It is very healthy. Thanks to stringent action against pirated VCDs and lower entertainment tax have brought fresh changes to the industry. People have started to come to theatres. With Multiplexes coming up, I am sure the future looks much bright.

How was it working with Kamal Haasan in Vasool Raja?

It was a great learning experience. Though a remake, I gave enough attention in making the script suit the Tamil audience and more overworking with a great actor like Kamal Haasan itself was a great privilege for me.
