Rendavathu Padam - Retail rack-up
IndiaGlitz  [Monday, March 11, 2013]

CS Amudhan has etched his name on rock, in the K-town. So whatever we expect of him henceforth will only be better than the previous film. What has he come up with in his second film, 'Rendavathu Padam'? The film stars Vimal, Aravind Akash, Richard and Vijayalakshmi, among others. Here's a sneak peak to the movie, through its album, composed to fame by Kannan.

1. Adutha Paruppu
Voices:
Vijay Prakash, Velmurugan, Mukesh
Lyrics: Na Muthukumar

Opening on a devotional note, this track makes for a rascally essay of confidence. No one would have expected the turn of events in the due course of the song, turning into heroic mettle of a possibly aspiring actor. Among the steady beats and bass strings, are a collection of day-to-day noises like the cooker whistling and a hawker shouting, splattered all through the length, that makes it a very cozy number. The lyrics have carried the mood in a light hearted manner, with timely comic dialogues in between. At 3 minutes odd, the song is truly entertaining.

2. Kuppai Thotti
Voices:
Hariharan, Ujjayinee
Lyrics: Madhan Karky

One can almost immediately find out where this song draws inspiration from - Michael Jackson. The song has its beats based on one of his tracks, with interspersed English lyrics here and there, which, yet again, owe their credits to the late veteran. After a long hiatus, we have Ujjayinee on the female vocals, singing alongside Hariharan, making the song close to heart. Lyrics are a rage, taking the listener for a roller coaster ride. Alternating between Tamil, Thanglish, English, and quite interestingly ancient obscure Tamil, on a systematic R&B beat base and beautiful soulful voices, the duet is a romantic comedy.

3. Roja Poo
Voices:
SP Balasubramanian, KS Chitra
Lyrics: Madhan Karky

This one is for everyone! If you had watched the trailer of this film, then you can instantly relate to this song. Any music lover, picked at random, will always secure a Chita-SPB duet in their list of classics; and 'Rendavathu Padam' has just bagged the credits for one such time-honored standard. One may easily mistake this for a song belonging to the last century, for it sounds no less than one of those blaring romantic hits of the 1980s. The poetry in the beginning tends to remind one of the Ilayaraja hits, and so does the rest of the song. In all, this song is bound to make the makers proud, making it to the list of timeless classics.

4. Aappu Birthday
Voices:
Mukesh, Rahul Nambiar, Velmurugan
Lyrics: Na Muthukumar

Friends are supportive, caring, comforting, understanding, helpful, abetting, and everything nice. But more than anything, they invariably pull your leg. And what better occasion than birthday! The song unfolds with a bunch of friends singing the birthday song in the wackiest sort of way, with curses overflowing. The song then transforms into thoroughbred friendly affair, wishing happiness for a wonderful friend, celebrating his birthday. A portion of this song also features in the trailer. The track finally closes with a droopy self-wish.

It seems like the album ends where it started. The first song is along the lines of self-confidence, and the last one is, in parts, self-appreciation. In an era where it is an unwritten rule that an album must contain five or more songs, this is a path breaker, with only four yet powerful songs. One good thing about all the tracks is they, invariably, lift your mood and bring on a smile. On the other hand, the whole album sounds commercial - every aspect and nuance is not what is found in common. In all, it stands out, completely.

Rating: 3/5 - Crowd favourite

Verdict: Funny, light hearted, commercial
