Aadhalaal Kaadhal Seiveer - Yuvan with a difference
IndiaGlitz  [Monday, November 05, 2012]

Every now and then, Yuvan Shankar Raja pops up with an unexpected album which has zero hype surrounding it. Some of these soundtracks have gone on to produce great songs that are underdogs nonetheless against the rigorously promoted item numbers, but still make for a good listen. Following that line, let us have a look at what Adhalaal Kadhal Seiveer has in store for us.

Mella Sirithaal Kaadhal Than - Yuvan Shankar Raja Listen here

The opening song of the album has Yuvan branding himself over it, with familiar low-to-high pitch changes, unconventional beats throughout and some unique mixing elements. It finds it's range between club and techno and has quite a few special effects to help it out. Yugabharathi's lines attempt to appeal to the youth. It's the most prominent song from the list.

Alaipaayum Nenjile - Udit Narayan Listen here

Whenever Udit Narayan comes by to sing a song in Tamil, it doesn't go unnoticed after the first listen. The audience has grown quite familiar with his style and some even a bit fond of it. In this case, his vocals match with the minimalist beats well. Yugabharathi's lyrics have a lot of philosophy blended in, but the go unnoticed with Udit flowing up and down the track.

Thappu Thanda Pannum Vayasu - Javed Ali, Bhavatharani Listen here

Remember Chinnan Sirusunga from Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum? Not likely, for many. This song follows similar lines, with almost the same beats. Even for a very subtle number, we can spot a lot of effects added in by Yuvan. The interludes have good usage of instruments that add some credibility to the track. Lyrics are folky and a bit straightforward and have enough sensuality to help the visuals.

Poovum Poovum - Vijay Yesudas, Vineetha Listen here

A weird place for an electronic song, and some unusual compositions from Yuvan make Poovum Poovum more interesting than it would have been. Vijay Yesudas smooth rendition and Vineetha's lines in contrast help the track, especially in the charanam. It has all the ingredients of a dark song, but appears more conventional thanks to the lyrics.

Four songs, and the album is over. That's quite a surprise in a Tamil film. Anyhow, Yuvan has given some new inputs with Aadhalaal Kaadhal Seiveer. The Mella Sirithaal is likely to be remembered by audiences, but the rest of the tracks, despite being different don't gain momentum in time to impress.

Rating - 2.5/5

Verdict - Another quick-fire shot from Yuvan, but doesn't catch on quickly
