Mayavi - Big bang stuff
IndiaGlitz  [Monday, February 28, 2005]

There has been lot of speculation on Mayavi as it is difficult to guess from the promos what kind of film it is. It is more so after listening to the songs. Set to tune by the successful Telugu music director Devi Sri Prasad, the songs have a raw energy and a zany zip to them. In that sense, it is what the modern day moviegoers expect.

1) Seetu Kattu Rani Pole

If you have heard Devi Sri Prasad (one of his songs is featured in Thirupachi) before, you will immediately understand that he is one behind this one too. He has a propensity to go for the heavy beats. With unmistakable rock and roll strains, the number brings in typical folksy bits too. Tippu is okay. But Sudha, the female singer, is the standout performer here.

2) Kadavul Thandha

The soft beginning, especially after the previous number, is refreshing. But the tune and the rhythm patterns leave you with a heard-before feel. SPB Charan sounds like his father did 20 years ago. And that is really good. Kalpana is adequate and her voice fits with the minimal instrumentation.

3) Tamilnattil

Devi Sri Prasad in his typical mode again. He goes for the top-range beats a Palakadu Sree Ram stands him in good stead. And Malathi sings like, er, Malathi. Typical stuff from all concerned.

4) Devaloga Rani

Mix a couple of rhythm pieces together and mash them with some guitar interludes and bung in some rap bits and what you get is Devaloga Rani. Sumangali's voice is almost drowned in the orchestration.

5) Mayavi Mayavi

The film name bearing song has to be special. This is if you like Arabian lilts and some peppy singing. Chitra is fabulous as only she can be and Ranjith is more than adequate company. Devi Sri Prasad chips in with his chorus bits.

6) Kathadi Pole

How do you fancy Daeler Mehendi Punjabi folk in Puspavanam Kuppuswamy's heavy voice?  Perhaps for some it is like eating Tandoori Chopsuey (whatever that is). For a few it may be pleasant mix of cultures. Kalpana is again tremendous. The beats dominate more than anything else, again.

Looks like Devi Sri Prasad has delivered what he has been asked to.

It is big bang.
