Poo - Different and spellbinding
IndiaGlitz  [Monday, November 03, 2008]

Director Sasi's penchant for good music is well known. All his previous films 'Sollamale', 'Rojakootam' and 'Dishoom' had songs that caught the fascination of music-buffs. With his latest film 'Poo' Sasi has reiterated his stand at extracting the best from his music composers.

The think-tank behind 'Poo' has introduced a talented musician S. S. Kumaran and the debutant has indeed given out his best and is sure to appease the masses.

With the likes of Na Muthukumar penning soulful lyrics and the exquisite cinematography of Muthiah the music reaches out very well with the desired effect. Sasi has set out on a new path, quite different from his contemporaries and is sure to enthrall one and all.

The album has six tracks and each one is quite different from the other. Hats off to the Sasi and S. S. Kumaran combo for they have come out with some very unique and quite different tunes.

Choo Choo Maari ( Mirdula, Srimathi and Parthasaradhy)

Lyrics: Na Muthukumar

It's been long since an entire song has been rendered by kids. This song penned by Na Muthukumar comprises of simple lyrics and is straight from the hearts of children.

Mirdula, Srimathi and Parthasarathy, a young trio have rendered the song which has simple beats sans heavy percussion.

No doubt it is a refreshing number with Kumaran giving more clarity to lyrics with music emphasizing its importance.

Maaman Engirukka ( Harini, Tippu, Karthik and Master Rohith)

Lyrics: Na Muthukumar

A romantic duet with the amalgamation of Carnatic and folk comes across as an invigorating attempt from the debutant music director. The song comes out clean and convincing. The mellifluous flutes in the interludes draw our entire attention. It is like listening to the compositions of Rahman and Ilayaraja in one go.

Quite a pacy song with mild beats with Harini and Thippu at their flowing best.

Aavaram Poo (Chinmayee)

Lyrics: Na Muthukumar

Ilayaraja's songs are incomplete without the use of flute and violin. Debutant Kumaran seems to be following this tradition. The song from the young composer has violin and flute giving a pleasant feel to the listeners. If Kumaran's rhythm pattern in the song is impressive so are the simple lyrics by Na Muthukumar.   Hats off Chinmayee! She has given a soulful voice which adds more pep to the number.

Paasa Mazhai (SS Kumaran)

Lyrics: S.Gnaanakaravel

The master in Kumaran is very evident with this number. Besides composing the tune, the music director has gone ahead to sing the number. The song has complicated musical interludes with soft musical instruments coming together to give a pleasant feel. Kumaran's voice is different from the rest and a feeling of hope and confidence are oozing throughout.

Dheena (Shankar Mahadevan, Hemambiga)

Lyrics: Na Muthukumar

A lively number with a rhythmic fusion of ghatam, thavil, drums and mridangam. A racy tune with an energetic Shankar Mahadevan at full flow. Surely a delight to hear the song which oozes with energy from the beginning till the end. spells best the shifting paradigms of Hemambiga is noteworthy. The youthful lyrics of Muthukumar deserves applause.

Sivakasi Rathiyae (Periya Karuppu Thevar)

Lyrics: S.Gnaanakaravel

With a desire to render a different voice, Kumaran has opted for Periya Karuppu Thevar. This senior singer also sang a song for the film 'Virumandi', which was composed by Ilayaraja. Periya Karuppu Thevar gets a chance to sing a full-fledged number with 'Sivakasi Rathiyae'. Dominated by hilarious lyrics and fast folk beats, the song has flutes in the interludes.

On the whole, it has been an excellent show by debutant Kumaran. The songs in 'Poo' are sure to refresh listeners and most definitely would top the charts.
