 At a time when commercial cinema is ruling the roost, there are a few still in Kollywood when promises a whiff of fresh air. Cheran is one among the few who craves for a different but a meaningful cinema.
His movies always served a purpose. Be it expressing his opinion on communal harmony (Bharathi Kannamma), brain drain of youngsters (Vettri Kodi Kattu), need to preserve agrarian sector (Pandavar Bhoomi), nostalgic memory of a youth (Autograph) or the necessity to take care of elders in the family (Thavamai Thavamirundhu), Cheran is right there delivering his best.
Now the ace film-maker is back with his next – ‘Pokkisham’. Starring Padmapriya opposite him, ‘Pokkisham’ is an analysis of the changing times and its impact on impact on human emotions especially romance.
Throwing light on the film, Cheran says ‘Pokkisham’ will have a message, good music and enjoyable scenes. It is a period film that is set in Calcutta of 1970s.
It chronicles the life of a youth. Padmapriya plays Nadira, a Muslim girl. 'But the flick does not dwell about any religion. It glorifies the joy and pain of romance’, he says and adds, 'Today, the technological advancements has shrunk the globe and human emotions has taken a beating. ‘Pokkisham’ is a collection of incidents in the 1970s when people relied only on letters for communication'.
The story revolves around two hearts in love and legacy of memories left thereupon and these are picturised as ‘treasure’, Cheran says and adds, ‘A Tamil literature student gets introduced to a young marine engineer working in Calcutta in 1970. The literature introduction blossoms into love. But age-old dominating traditional restrictions become villain to them.’
Vijayakumar and Telugu hero Aryan Rajesh play prominent roles. The movie has been produced by Nemichand Jhabak and V Hitesh. Its cinematography is by Rajesh Yadav, art direction by Vairabalan, editing by Saravana-Iyappan and music by Sabesh - Murali.
Sabesh Murali have come up with songs that suits the mood of the film. A period film with a good musical score always go hand-in-hand. The duo will go places after the movie, says Cheran.
Promising a plenty is ‘Pokkisham’, which would woo all section of audience.
