Ilayaraja’s onscreen presence!
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, April 30, 2009]

‘Azhagar Malai’ holds a sensation for ardent fans of musical maestro Ilayaraja, first time ever you will watch the legend walk the screens. Starring RK and Bhanu of ‘Thamirabharani’ fame in the lead roles, SP Rajkumar directs the movie produced by Sangili Murugan.

Director Rajkumar when asked how he could convince the camera shy maestro to enact the song he shared the secret saying “first time I am associated with him for this film. Ilayaraja composed a wonderful piece of music to the lyrics ‘Uzhagam ippo enga poguthu… ennaku intha annai boomi pothum’. Initially we thought of featuring it as a title song, but after recording the track I felt it deserves more than that.”

“When Ilayaraja enquired if I had listened to the tunes, I gently suggested my idea of featuring him crooning the song on screen. He gave a brief thought and gave his consent and it happened.”

The movie opens with the maestro crooning this melody. It has been featured from retrospect of the legend himself. The viewers will see him walking through places evoking nostalgic memories like, his regular road to Thiruvannamalai Ramana Ashram, his school, American College of Madurai he graduated from, his mother’s cemetery.

He was overwhelmed with happiness to watch it all on screen, and the entire team was moved by witnessing his simplicity. It was also screened for his sons Yuvanraja, Karthikraja, daughter Bhavadharini, and his childhood friends, said the director.
