Veteran actress passes away

Veteran actress S Varalakshmi passed away in Chennai on Tuesday. The 84-year old actress is survived by a daughter and a son.

According to family sources, Varalakshmi had an injury on her back after she fell down six months ago. The veteran, who was undergoing treatment since then, breathed her last at 8 pm Tuesday.

Born in Jaggampeta, Andhra Pradesh, she started her career as child artist in saint role in 'Balayogini', when she was nine years old. Her first successful movie was 'Balaraju' in 1948. She later acted with all top heroes in Telugu and Tamil industries.

She was also famous for her voice, and sung her songs in all movies she acted. In her later career, she acted in mother and aunt roles. She married film producer A L Srinivasan (lyricist Kannadasan's brother) and has two children. She continued to act after marriage in senior roles in Telugu and Tamil cinema.
