Avatar is a film that is in news in India for its Indian connection. It stars the 33-year old Australian actor Sam Worthington who only dreamt of jumping out of the well he was holed up in. All he wanted was to do was to "get out of the small town I grew up in." He casually attended an acting audition along with a girl (Natalie Mark, who is also known as Sam's girl friend) whom he had befriended a few years ago. As destiny would have it, he was shortlisted in the audition and went about bagging the international project Avatar, directed by James Cameron, in which he is playing the character named Jake Sully.
Here is what he told the media recently. "I was a bricklayer; I built houses and acting came about because of a girl. I was all 19 and when I met a girl who wanted to go to the premiere drama school in Australia, NIDA, where Mel Gibson, Cate Blanchett and many others went. She had an audition and I auditioned with her for moral support, to cheer her on. I just made my way through it in my own way and they said ‘keep going, keep going’, so the audition kept going and then eventually they said, ‘would you like to come and spend three years here?’ Not surprisingly, his girlfriend reportedly dumped him because she was envious!
