"Anything boring can't be good cinema" - Dibakar on 'Shanghai'

IndiaGlitz [Friday, June 01, 2012]

He may be tagged as one of the crusaders of new age cinema but Dibakar Banerjee is happy to be better off without such fancy titles. Happy to make films that fall in his space and promising to tell a different story in each of his outings, Dibakar is also sure that he would always make films for the audience instead of any personal gratification. Though his films (Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Love, Sex aur Dhokha) have been termed as parallel and offbeat, Dibakar declares that entertainment has always been a key element in his story telling, something that could continue with 'Shanghai' as well.

"My fundas are quite sorted here. I am of a firm belief that anything which is boring can't be good cinema. Anything serious which is trying to be profound can't be good cinema either. You can have good cinema but to make a film which is profound is sacrilege. Cinema is about entertainment; it has to connect to the audience. I don't think any of the films that I have made so far have not been entertaining. At least I can't be accused of that", smiles Dibakar.

Here is hoping that 'Shanghai', which has music by Vishal-Shekhar and features Emraan Hashmi, Abhay Deol and Kalki Koechlin in principal roles, does turn out to be entertaining for sure once it is releases all over next weekend.
