    Tête-à-Tête with Rana

    Wednesday, May 26, 2010
The tall and handsome hunk of Tollywood, Rana is here to talk about himself, his new movies and what it means to be from a studio background. Rana talks about Bollywood, his Tamil movie and many more.

    The Change after Leader

We are not sure how many of them have changed but a thought has been provoked among a lot of them. I think we have achieved what we wanted to achieve.

    Attributing Leader’s Success

It’s the film’s success. The film is beyond all of us. The first credit, I’ll give it to Shekhar. It’s Shekhar’s thoughts, his idea which I was a part of the execution. So I think the success first goes to Shekhar and then to all of us.

    My First Hindi Film

My First Hindi film is ‘Dum Maro Dum’. It’s a multi-starrer, ensemble film. It’s got Abhishek Bachchan, me and Prateik Babbar. This movie is based on the Goan drug trade. Most of the movie has been shot in Goa. My character is a Goan guitarist so I play a musician in the film. I think the audience will like it.

    My Pair in the movie

I am paired with Bipasha in the film. She is an extremely fine actor. I am very lucky to act with someone of her caliber in my second film itself.

    Comparing Tollywood and Bollywood

In the process of making a film in any language is the same be it Tamil, Hindi, Telugu or English. The way of story telling differs. Being in Hyderbad I have seen a lot of movies, old and new Telugu movies and Tamil movies. I don’t quite know about Bollywood so I am learning now. Rohan Sippy the director of my Hindi movie is the son of Ramesh Sippy who made the ever classic ‘Sholay’, there is a lot of knowledge I am gaining while doing this film.

    Dubbing in the Hindi Movie

This movie is implementing Sync sound. So direct dubbing on set. I think my voice is my strength. I’d like to use it.

    My Next Debut!

Yes, even though the Hindi movie is my second, I am still a debutant. I am also making my debut in Tamil. This year will be fully in debut.

    About the Tamil Movie

It’s actually a bilingual film. The director is Selvaraghavan. He is a very successful and prolific director in Tamil and Telugu. I am glad to work and do a film with him. The difference between Leader, Dum Maro Dum and this, will be a big change. I am hoping that I can work in different kind of genres. Selva’s movie is a period movie. It will be a visual treat.

    Connecting with My Fans…

I have a website I am active on. I use twitter. My id is rana daggubati. When I was writing my blog, I wanted to be more interactive so I joined twitter where the response is instant from the fans. It is a highly interactive platform.

    My Thought on Multi-starrers…

A lot of multi-starrers are starting off now. It is ultimately the right story that can give each of the actors enough space. I would love to work together with other stars.

    Listening to Scripts…

Our studio gates are open for new scripts. I personally listen to 2 to 3 scripts, read 2 to 3 scripts when I am not shooting every day. I read the script if it is given to me in English or in Telugu. We have a full script team sitting in the studio waiting for good scripts. That is our job, we are always in search of new ideas. I always work with bound scripts. If a movie is a flop, I learn from it and I’ll know a movie shouldn’t be done that way.

Learning and Speaking Telugu the right way

Before I entered movies, I was brought up in Chennai where we used to speak a lot of Tamil and English rather than Telugu. I always had one thing in mind. When we learn pure Telugu, the casual way of speaking Telugu will come out fast. I used to see a lot of N T Rama Rao’s movies. Seeing those movies I used to learn a lot. Besides this, I also had a Telugu tuition to learn before getting in to films.

My height as a barrier to find a heroine…

(Laughs) We have still not started Selvaraghan’s film because of the heroine. It’s a very strong character and we are looking for the right heroine. We hope to find someone in the next one month.

    Rana and Comedy

Definitely. We all have a comedian in us. We all live a happy life. We want to laugh and enjoy ourselves. I would love to do a comedy movie and I am hoping I can.

Level of involvement in a film

Till a story comes to shape, I involve myself. After that I don’t bother about it. After the script stage, I have to fulfill my duties as an actor. I suggest in some departments but I don’t actively take part in that.

Increasing the count of my movies…

I am still in debut. (Laughs) Although I am doing other languages, people are still asking me if I’ll act only 1 movie per year. I would ideally want to do 3 films in a year. I want to do as many as I can.

My Inspiration! My Idol in Cinema!

Someone asked me this question earlier. If I see the qualities of my grandfather, my father and my uncle in one man, that man is my idol. I would ideally like to be somebody like that.

    My Look in Leader

When Shekhar garu told me this story, I understood that he tried to express his experience as a person in the society. When I was listening to him I couldn’t visualize anyone else. So I tried to adapt his look. Though we are completely different people, I tried it and it worked for the film. So the look is quite similar to Shekhar Kammulla.

    Dubbing in Tamil

I am dubbing in Tamil on my own. Having grown up in Chennai, I learnt Tamil. I am happy to be dubbing on my own for Telugu, Tamil and Hindi.

    Sports…

Like all Indians, I like cricket. I used to play a lot of cricket. Now I play a lot of soccer. When shooting in Goa, I played a lot of soccer because it is a popular sport there.

    About Abhishek Bachchan

I have known Abhishek for many years now. He’s a fun guy to be with and work with on set. Though I am it is my second movie but my first in Hindi, the rawness as an actor is still there. Not only Abhishek, even the others helped me giving me a beautiful platform to work on.

    Working with Big Studios

I also come from a studio background. I understand how studios think. I know what problems they face with other actors. I try not to do those things. That way I have a comfortable relationship with studios.

    Rana Says,

Thank you very much IndiaGlitz readers. We need all of you to watch our films to promote us and enjoy yourself. Please watch the movies only in theatres and not in pirated cds. There are over 1 crore Indians working in the film industry in India, you are hitting all of them when you watch this one cd. Please think. Thank You.
