Mr. Nokia is a mix of genres and is characteristically Tamil music-meets-Telugu trend. Yuvan Shankar Raja offers a regular and passable fare. Coming as it does from the musician of Rangam and Panjaa, this cliched album leaves us wanting more.
Lyricists Ramajogayya Sastry and Lakshmi Bhupal do not save it either. Manoj Manchu makes a pleasant debut as a lyric-writer.
Mr. Nokia
Artist: Ranjith Lyrics: Ramajogayya Sastry
The album begins with a riveting number that matches the yuppie feel of the title. Yuvan Shankar Raja infuses electronic symphony and Ranjith's vocals only add a texture to the hippie hue. On the flip side, Ramajogayya Sastry's lyrics are threateningly lost in sound and fury.
No Money No Honey
Artists: Karthik, Premji Lyrics: Ramajogayya Sastry
The song has that folk song feel throughout. While Yuvan's composing takes oscillates between fast-pacing and slow-pacing, Karthik's vocals lend a touch of maturity. Sastry's lyrics are not high on a preachy tone and give a voice to the feelings of the jilted lover.
Oke Oka Jeevitham
Artists: Haricharan Lyrics: Ramajogayya Sastry
This soundtrack packs philosophical lyrics with the sombre vocals of Haricharan, not to forget Yuvan's mellifluous composing. The slow pace might make you want to hit the pause button, but just as you give it one more audience, the song grows on your ears.
Pista Pista
Artists: Karthik, Yuvan Lyrics: Manoj Manchu
The cacophonous instrumentation and Yuvan's nasal twang might not impress you, but it must be acknowledged that Manoj's lyrics have a trace of simplicity. Karthik's vocals do not take the song to the next level. Given the frivolity of the mood, Yuvan should have done a better job to make it look irreverent and serious at once. However, the song begins on a high note - both music-wise and lyrics-wise.
Pranam Poye Badha
Artists: Yuvan Lyrics: Manoj Manchu
Manoj's melancholic lyrics take the agony of the boy in distress to the next level. The heart is cut from the body and thrown out like a limb. Grrr! Yuvan's nasal twang, again, gives a sense of déjà vu and it has that Kollywoodian quality.
Mr. Nokia Theme
Artists: Blazee Lyrics: Lakshmi Bhupal
The song effectively fuses pounding instrumentals with the folksy touch. Blazee's raw voice makes it all the more compelling. What is lacking is a sense of melody. It is, again, cacophonous.
Ye Janma Bandhamo
Artists: Ranjith, Priya Hemesh Lyrics: Lakshmi Bhupal
Yuvan's mixes melodic feel with symphonious composing. The very slow pace will induce joie de vivre in you if you are lover of mellifluous numbers. Otherwise, you could enjoy the honeyed vocals of Priya Hemesh and the euphonic voice of Ranjith. |
