Aparichithudu - A winner all the way
IndiaGlitz  [Thursday, June 09, 2005]

Shankar's films have always had extraordinary songs. And all along he had gone for A R Rehman. But for this film, he has gone to Harris Jayaraj. You listen to the numbers with a slight skepticism.

But quickly the misgivings are replaced as Harris comes up trumps and produces a brilliant mix of melody and mass. And Harris deserves our thanks for simply avoiding the ear-perforating Punjabi drums that have spoilt Telugu songs in recent times.

1. Nivanti Taruni

The song starts with Jagadanandakaraka in Naattai (a pancharatna krithi). Just as you enjoy the essential purity in it, the song wafts and seamlessly takes off with K J Yesudass (though slightly gruff) and Harini getting into groove. At a time when melody and softness are at premium, this is priceless number. Full of nuances and honey-touched sweetness. The orchestration is one of the best heard in recent times.

2. Oh Sukumari

When you listen to this song, just drop whatever you are doing. Because it deserves your full attention as it mixes folk, carnatic and modern-day orchestration. Shankar Mahadevan sings as only as he can and Harini gives him more than adequate company. Splendid stuff (the touch of Sama raga is very pleasing).

3. Naku Neeku Nokia

Peppy rhythms, trendy lyrics, rap-like enunciation...you get the idea and flavor? Well Nakul (though slightly nasal) and Vasundhra Das give all they have, and the energy they whip up is amazing. The interludes are also very good and show the music director's imagination.

4. Love Elephantla

This is also an in-your-face song with an attitude. The song throbs with youthful energy and modern lingo. The lyrics may be banal, but the rhythm and the pop pulsation are enjoyable. Nakul, G V Prakash and Tippu belt out this zinger. Head for the disco floors and ask your DJ to play this.

5. Konda Kaki

A raucous, rollicking fun-provider. You cannot help breaking into an impromptu dance just listening to it. This is what a good mass number is all about. Jassie Gift is simply good while KK provides the right elevation. Sujatha voice, usually not preferred for such numbers, is a revelation. The surprise element in the song is her voice. A sure winner!

Shankar and Harris Jayaraj have a winner on the hands.
