Jagapathibabu who has so far done family roles and a few performance oriented action flicks, is now on a movie signing spree. Perhaps the actor feels he is aged old to be doing family cinema or sentimental flicks, his movies offlate have been topical stories, political dramas and socio-action scripts that potray him in charecters that transcend the age factor. 'Chattam' is one such action cinema from Jagapathibabu. After watching it, this is what we think about the film.

Story

Gowrishankar(Jagapathibabu) is a practical police inspector who is corrupt and takes bribes. Entangled in an acid attack case and kidnapping of a girl, the story takes a twist when a terrorist Habib  and a few criminals are killed. CBCID official Murali Sharma tries to unfold the mystery behind the death of the criminals and the terrorist. The rest of the story is on who killed the criminals, what is their connection with Gowrishankar.

Performances

Jagapathibabu performs with ease and is authentic as a cop. He has done a few cop movies in which he played encounter specialist and was convincing at that. He delivers similar authenticity in his mannerisms and expressions. He is certainly the biggest USP of this otherwise cliched movie. If anyone had doubts, Vimala Raman clears them up with this film that she is here to sign anymovies irrespective of the role in the film. She is relegated to a few songs and blink and miss roles. Mayuri sizzles in her item number and the way she broke into a jig was good. Murali Sharma too was in tandem with his role and matches up to the intensity of Jagapathibabu's action. The others are absolutely ignorable.

Remarks

The story of this movie is well known to anyone who watched cop films. The intent of this flick is to arouse a public response towards the apathy of cops, our system and build some suspense around the twists. This is exactly where the movie fails. The story is boringly predictable, songs are not worth sitting through and screenplay is bad. In the midst of so much action, there is no comic scene that can bring some relief. Cinematography is like a child's play and costumes Vimalaraman wore are out of place to her charecter. Her skin show makes you think twice before you decide to watch her films hereafter and we wonder if she is desperate to do any film that comes her way. For such a topical film that deals with acid attacks, terrorists and corruption, an equally engaging background score is expected which isn't there. The dialogues are penned well and are thought provoking. The film is caught between entertainment and message and in the process it doesn't give both.

Verdict

There is nothing special about it. You can convinienty ignore it.
