A 26-year-old Chinese scholar visiting the University of Illinois is presumed to have been kidnapped from Chicago, causing the 300,000 odd Chinese students and their families back home to live in fear.

The student, who had come to Illinois to study photosynthesis and crop productivity, has been missing since early last month and is believed to be dead, though no body has been found.

A 28-year-old former student from the same university has been charged with kidnapping the woman.

State-sponsored Chinese media said the kidnapping proved China was safer than the US. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is still investigating the matter.
