Actor-Politician Vijaykanth is fondly referred to as ‘Captain’ by his fans as well as Tamil cinema buffs. This is mainly because the actor’s 100th film was titled Captain Prabhakaran and the stupendous success of the film lead to the ‘Captain’ tag being added with the senior actor’s name. That he has acted as Police officer in many films has added more meaning to this pet name.

However an ex-serviceman has recently filed a case against VIjaykanth for using the term Captain which should be used only for high rank officials in national security services like army, navy and air force. While the hearing on this petition is pending in the court, director Selvamani who made the film Captain Prabhakaran has said “there is nothing wrong in calling Vijaykanth as Captain”. He has substantiated his statement with the following arguments.

“We refer to the leaders of Sports teams as captain. So this is a common word. Captain Vijaykanth is being called so only because he acted in the film Captain Prabhakaran and it started way before his entry into politics. Moreover the actor has never claimed himself as Captain and it is only his fans and general public who address him with the term out of sheer affection. Hence he cannot be held responsible for this”

Hope the director’s arguments are considered by the court
