Prime Narendra Modi had recently appealed to self-proclaimed saviours of cows to not take violent measures against those suspected of harming the animals and had said that it was not acceptable to take law and order into one`s hands. But his words seemed to have had no effect as drivers transporting cattle were attacked in Guwahati, Assam.

On Sunday, a group of men, who claimed to belong to the Hindu Yuva Chhatra Parishad, stopped vehicles carrying cows and brutally attacked the drivers for allegedly smuggling the cows near Sonapur, just 30 km from Guwahati.

PM Modi`s comments were supposed to discourage gau rakshaks. Some leaders had asked Modi to transform words into enforceable action to stop the brutal and often baseless attacks.
