Dunkirk Movie Review

A war ground, for a 120-minute segment, filled with risk and tension at all times. Just when you think it has all calmed down, a literal bomb drop that surprises you just like it surprises the characters in Dunkirk.

You’d expect a movie from Christopher Nolan to be more intelligent but it’s not. It is quite static and not a puzzle, unlike his previous projects.

The movie starts with a brief introduction on the shootings that take place in the city, from the there to the shore where a number of army soldiers are already injured from an almost one-week bombing and shootings.

The cinematography blows your mind and really takes you on this rollercoaster of an adventure because just when you think the movie is going to calm down now and the happy tone might begin, a surprise awaits.

Fionn Whitehead really impresses you and convinces you that he takes his job seriously, however, he, just like German refugee in the battalion of the Arm force, wants to find an easy way out that’s when he finds Harry Styles’ character, Tom.

Harry Styles’ debut in the movie and for a debutant he did quite a great job, you see this rustic, bold and dominant side of his that just orders around people to do things for him. His dialog delivery is on point with his acting skills really on sharp and to the point.

The movie really captures the war-zone scene, it really brings in the tension, in an air-conditioned multiplex that is always chilly, you start to sweat when the Tom Hardy’s character has to take a landing after the English force survives.

When the war ends and the people survive and gear up for the next one, Harry and Fionn’ characters converse in the train, just disappointed with themselves because the person distributing them the blankets doesn’t look them in the eye.

In the acceptance of defeat and “All we did was survive” disappointment, a tone of happiness sparks in the people as they just congratulate for trying.

A movie that gives a beautiful message that you don’t have to win in order to succeed, all you need to do is survive.

And that is what this movie pulls at the heartstrings of the audience and which is why the whole audience claps and cheers as soon as the end-title show up on the big screen.

A film by Christopher Nolan but in his usual style, but something different and something that has more than just brilliance and excellence, it has a heart to it.

The cinematography combined with Nolan’s intelligence and the team effort of the entire cast, Dunkirk is another milestone of a success.
