Movies adapted from short stories and novels are a rarity in Tamil cinema. Unlike Malayalam movies where several movies including that of biggies are inspired by novels and short stories, Kollywood films revolved around commercial cliches.

However in the recent past, there are host of movies being churned out in Tamil filmdom inspired by short stories and novels.

Thangar Bachan is churning out 'Onpathu Rupai Nottu' inspired by his novel titled the same. It stars Sathyaraj and Archana in lead roles.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's 'Ulyin Osai', a short story is being made into a film. Inspired by the lives of a sculptor and a classical dancer, the movie stars Vineeth in pivotal role.

Lyricist Pa Vijay will play the title role in a movie titled 'Thai Kaviyam'. It is an adaptation of Maxim Gorki's Russian novel The Mother. The Tamil version is penned by Karunanidhi.
