The Government of Andhra Pradesh-sponsored Nandi Awards have been declared for the year 2008. Gamyam (directed by Radha Krishna a.k.a. Krish) and Vinayakudu (directed by Sai Kiran Adivi) have bagged the awards for Best Film and second Best Film respectively.

With awards going to these two films that were made on a shoestring budget, small filmmakers in the industry must be upbeat.

Gamyam that starred Allari Naresh and Sharwanand in lead roles, was a tale of self-discovery where the rich guy Sharwanand gets to know of the real world outside and gets transformation.

A film that sensitively portrayed the emotional journey of one lead when he trudges villages and highways in search of his love life, Gamyam was heart-rending when audience saw Naresh dying in the end.

On the other hand, Vinayakudu is a simple love story based in Cyberabad. Produced by Saritha Patra, the Krishnudu-starrer (who will next be seen in Village Lo Vinayakudu, wrongly touted as a sequel) was a romantic comedy that fared decently at the box-office.

The hero here is a fat man who loves a girl but the heroine does not reciprocate until she is attracted to his inner personality one fine day.

As two of films made with distinct subjects get the covetous Nandi, it's a milestone Tollywood will savour for long.

However, the biggest surprise was 'Parugu' which has been adjudged third Best Film. The film, directed by Bommarillu Bhaskar had Allu Arjun and Sheela playing the leads, was said to have many scenes that seemed to be a rip off of real life situations in Chiranjeevi's family.

Though it was an average film at the BO and does not boast of much entertainment values either, jurists felt it deserved a Nandi. Well, what can one say at the decision of the eminent panel?
