Golmaal

Thursday, January 1, 1970 • Hindi Comments

It has been around a couple of decades since David Dhawan followed the footsteps of his idol Manmohan Desai to create non-stop no-brainers masti'n'masala flicks. Something similar to that is attempted by director Rohit Shetty who made his debut with actioner 'Zameen' and has now changed lanes to come up with a fun flick 'GOLMAAL' that also has a tagline of FUN UNLIMITED. A multistarrer with actors like Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Rimmi Sen and Paresh Rawal sharing the frame, 'Golmaal' appears to be a sure shot entertainer on the anvil!

Gopal [Ajay Devgan], Madhav [Arshad Warsi], Lucky [Tusshar Kapoor] and Laxman [Sharman Joshi] are a group of four friends, each of them being one of its own kind of a character! Gopal is the eldest of the lot, both in age and experience. Inspite of nowhere being a college student, he still stays in a university hostel and ensures that he plays pranks on everyone he comes across in the university, be it a student or the Dean [Manoj Joshi] himself. He is a favorite amongst many as he knows how to catch hold of the question papers while the Dean hates him most since he himself has been conned by his whacky ideas, most notable being 'chaddi pe gaddi free' offers! Now one day Gopal is in a situation where he has to vacate his hostel and find a place for him and his 3 friends!

He does find an isolated place! But is it really isolated? No, because it belongs to Somnath [Paresh Rawal], a blind yet smart old man who cares most for his wife whom he fondly calls Manglaji [Sushmita Mukherjee]!

So how do the four men manage to stay on in Somnath's place? By placing Laxman [Sharman Joshi], youngest of the block, as their grandson Sameer. Why Laxman? Because he is the sweetest of the lot, the simplest boy that any grandparents would ever find and the most studious and hardworking of the gang! Unlike his other friends, his first love is studies as he aspires to make a name for himself. But with friends like Gopal, Madhav and Lucky, each of whom stay in his hostel room, such aspirations sound like a distant dream. Now he is the one who would have to make sure that his friends do not get kicked out of the house. But even his good deeds make him suffer the most as he gets caught every time!

What's the role Madhav and Lucky that have to play in this story that has Gopal and Laxman pairing up to take on Somnath with the former giving voiceover to the latter? A LOT!

Madhav looks at Gopal as his idol as he too wants to be him as far as leading a bunch of like minded people is concerned. He is Gopal's right hand man but he aspires to be like him one fine day. He takes all the right steps in this direction by emulating him but with hardly any positive outcomes! Afterall Gopal is Gopal! Meanwhile Lucky is as dumb as one can get, literally, as he can be seen but cannot be heard. In short, he is nothing but a 'bina volume ka TV'! And this is what that saves him always since he can get away with a murder. A great friend, he is the life of the gang but things seem destined to change as he falls in love!

But he is not the only one in fray as Gopal, Madhav and Laxman too loose their heart to her! Who's this girl?

She is none other than Nirali [Rimmi Sen], a great looking girl with a multifaceted personality! She knows how to sing, dance, drive in car rallies, train as a fashion designer or act in plays. There was not much that this fearless girl wanted but there was something much more that GOD had decided for her. A chance to choose between four men heads over heels in love with her!

With so many characters in fray and a breezy plot in the making, it could have been a handy situation for a 'golmaal'. But this is not all as there are many more interesting characters in the lives of our principal characters
