Yet another action film from the Sarath Kumar's stable which has shades of blockbuster movies like Basha, Ramana and Dhil.
A story of a military officer taking revenge on an influential man in the society for killing his friend is Hey.
Sarath Kumar plays the honest upright army officer --- and as his wont concentrates more on stunt sequences. While in his last film Chatrapathy he played a military officer taking revenge on a group of anti-socials, it's no different in Hey too. Namidha appears in skimpy costumes and is at her gorgeous best. A typical Kollywood heroine for she has no scenes to perform in the movie. Vadivelu, who plays Sarath Kumar's friend, walks away with all honors. He stands apart in this much-seen script and storyline.
The movie begins with Sakthivel (Sarath Kumar) selling electrical accessories along with his friend Palani (Vadivelu) leading a peaceful life at Palani. He comes across Anjali (Nameedha) and falls in love with her. Thanks to Palani's humorous ideas, Sakthivel succeeds in his love affair.
Sakthivel, however, incurs the wrath of a local goon Raghavan (Vincent Asokan). When the latter tries to misbehave with his sister, Sakthivel brutally attacks him. The villain group doesn't know that Sakthivel has a past.
Sakthivel's past is made to unfold in a flashback. He is a military officer who joins his friend Mani (Kalabhavan Mani) on a vacation. The duo decides to reform the society and cleanse the police department by taking as hostage a few corrupt police officers. They eventually run foul of a local goon Nachiyar (Kota Srinivasa Rao). The latter takes out Mani. Sakthi naturally vows to avenge his friend's death. The rest is all bloody climax in which Sakthi goes all out on a chopping spree. It is gory and grotesque.
The story is an old one and is made older with a cliched treatment. Sarath tries manfully. But neither his limited skills nor the appealing comedy of Vadivelu save the movie. For, the director has chosen a subject that even a child in kindergarten wouldn't find amusing. Srikanth Deva's tunes too fail to appeal.
Venkatesh, who directed movies like Chocklet, Dum, has given old wine in older bottle.
