"I've never asked any hero to act in my film. And it is out of question that they are not coming forward to work with me. I don't work with big heroes because I can't do films according to their requirements", says Ram Gopal Varma.

His 'Ice Cream' is going to be released on July 12th. On this occasion, we caught with the maverick director for an exclusive interview.

Everything changes

The intention of making 'Ice Cream' is to frighten the audiences. Rather than titling the film as 'Deyyam', 'Raatri' etc, if we keep a contrasting title like 'Ice Cream', the way we approach the film changes. Whether the characterization, the score or the situations we create, everything will change. So we have titled the film as 'Ice Cream'.

Can be anything

Audiences come to watch a horror film, only to get frightened. The reason for their fear can be anything. Whether it is because of a situation or because of the experiences of a character. The difference between my earlier horror films and 'Ice Cream' is that the audiences will be in the house of Tejaswi's character and experience the situations she face. It is the story of the film. If you write the story of Ice Cream, not even half of the page will be filled. But I tried to create something new and unique out of her loneliness with the help of visuals and sound. I think the flowcam and flow sound technologies used by me in this film, helped me so much.

Elevates it

Technology and content are inseparable. Alfred Hitchcock once said that technology will not carry a film, but it will elevate it. Most of the movie, Tejaswi's character will not speak to anyone. So I said that there is no content in the film. But to elevate her experiences , technology will help so much. So it is very difficult to make this film, without flowcam.

No relation

'Aag', 'Department' and 'Doud' are the films on which I had more money and time. But they have turned out to be the biggest disasters in my career. 'Satya' and 'Sarkar' are the cheapest films. So I believe that there is no relation between the output of a film and the time and money spent on it. If you consider the usage of camera and sound as the technology, 'Ice Cream' will be the most technically advanced film in my career. Because of the new technology and technicians, we are able to do good films in a very less time.

Believed in them

I was very impressed with the Gimbal rig technology brought by Arun and Seshu and met them. I believed in their intelligence and roped in them for this film. I even don't know what they will do. They have implemented whatever I want using the technology.

I'm the reason for both

I was the one, who introduced steady cam here. But the sad thing is that because of the gimbal rig technology introduced by me with this film, steady cam will get faded out. It will happen if the film is hit or a flop. The reason is when it comes to camera, there are many points which you can argue. But gimball rig facilitates the movement of a camera and it can do it 100 times better than steady cam. When I used digital camera for 'Raktha Charitra', every one said that it won't look like a movie. But after two years, all the other cameras are thrown away and many labs are closed. Gimball is very lighter and affordable than steady cam. I was the one who introduced and is going to be reason for the fading out of steady cam.

First saw her there

I've seen Tejaswi for the first time, when I was at an airport in Mumbai. She was far away and Amol Rathod, Puri Jagannadh's camera man, said showing her that she is the heroine in their film. I said that she is very beautiful and when I later asked Puri about her, he said that she is not the lead actress and she is only playing heroine's friend in the film. Later, when we want an actress for a small role in Vishnu's film, somebody said about Tejaswi. We roped in her for that role and I was shocked with how comfortable she was infront of the camera and with her ease in acting. So we have taken her for the film, 'Ice Cream'.

It's a mind game

I didn't think how we can clear the censor anytime during working for this film. As it is a horror film, it will be definitely an 'A' certificate film. Coming to the nude scene, you may think what is the necessity of shooting it, when censor board doesn't allow it. If you watch the movie, you will clearly understand that Tejaswi is nude.We have fixed the cameras in bathroom and Tejaswi has undressed herself as no one is present around. She had switched the camera on and even offed it. But it is a very tricky shot and how we have shown it should be watched on the screen. 'Ice Cream' is only a mind game.

It's the relation

The relation between Ice Cream and the movie is Tejaswi's character eats Ice Cream everytime. Our grandmothers often warn us not to eat more sweets or else they will get some problem. Navdeep's character says heroine that she is facing problems only because of eating Ice Cream. That is the connection of Ice Cream and the movie. I don't know whether it is correct or not.

I won't do films with them

I can't do commercial films with big heroes because I don't want to compromise according to their requirements. I can't do films with them. I get more thrilled when capturing the feelings of a girl in a lonely house than designing a introduction scene or any other scene. It doesn't mean I didn't do those films. Some films like 'Gaayam', 'Rangeela' etc are commercial movies.

I'll definitely do them

I will definitely make a film, if any short filmmaker or any body comes to me with a good subject, which excites me. Right now, I am busy making films with my ideas.

Liked 'Manam'

One of my bad habits is I don't watch Telugu films and even Hindi films. But in the recent past, I loved the film, 'Manam'. Making a film like that in Telugu is really praiseworthy.

Will go to Bollywood

My upcoming films are 'Pattapagalu' and an untitled film with Vishnu. I will s
