"65 to 70 per cent of films in India are south films. National cinema resides in the south. It's not bragging, it's a statement of fact," said Kamal Haasan in Chennai on Tuesday.

He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Media and Entertainment Business Conclave (MEBC), an initiative by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Kamal, who is the chairman of the conclave, said piracy continues to pose a huge threat to the film industry and stringent measures are needed at the earliest to check this menace.

He lauded digitisation of films and said it has changed the scenario by helping reach out to a wider audience and generating bumper openings at the box-office.

The two-day event is packed with seminars, workshops and presentations on various aspects of cinema.
