Guess who was the reference point for Kangna Ranaut when it came to adapting an overall persona for 'Tanu Weds Manu'? None less than Madhubala. For his rooted film which tells the story about two individuals who are as 'desi' as it gets, director Aanand L Rai had Madhubala in mind while conceiving Kangna's characterisation. This is what formed a part of his earlier conversations with the actress as well when he narrated the part to her.

"Aanand was very clear about the 'sur' he wanted to adopt for 'Tanu Weds Manu'," says Kangna who plays the central role of Tanu in the film, "He told me before the start of the film itself that he wasn't pitting me against the heroines of our times but instead had yesteryear heroine like Madhubala in mind. Of course he didn't mean that in terms of the look or setting, but in the spirit of the film and the character."

This is something which is visible in the film as well and no wonder, Kangna too is happy about the character that she is enacting. Reason being that while majority of films showcase the glamorous side of affairs, 'Tanu Weds Manu' is being noticed for it's simplicity as well as characters which are not just rooted but also highly identifiable.

With Madhavan in the lead, 'Tanu Weds Manu' releases all over this Friday.
